In China, we always clean the house for the Chinese New Year.

I am going to clean the kitchen.
I am going to wash the stove and refrigerator. I’m going to clean the sink, too. Then, I’m going to wash
the floor.
This is the floor.
I am cleaning the living room. Can you see what I’ve cleaned? Yes! I’ve cleaned the TV, couch and chairs. But something is dirty! What is it? The walls are dirty! Now I’m going to clean the walls. This is a wall.
I’m cleaning the bathroom. Many things are dirty in the bathroom, but I think the ceiling is clean. Do you? I don’t think I am going to clean the ceiling. This is the ceiling. Everyone works hard.
“Is the house clean now?” asks Danny. “Yes!” says Jenny. “I cleaned the kitchen. You cleaned the bathroom. Li Ming cleaned the living room.”
“Now we are ready for the Spring Festival!” says Li Ming.

It’s Chinese New Year’s Day! Yesterday we cleaned the house. Today is a special day in China.
Because today everyone put on new clothes. I like new red clothes for New Year’s Day!
Last year, my parents bought me new red pants and a new red shirt.
What else do you do? We visit our families.
I always visit my grandparents. “What happens next?” asks Jenny.
“In the evening, our family has suffered together,” says Li Ming.
“Then we make dumplings! We work together! We have fun!”
“What’s in the dumplings?” asks Jenny.
“We usually put pork, cabbage, green onions and ginger in them,” says Li Ming. Pork is meat from pigs.
“Then we cook the dumplings and eat them!” says Li Ming. “It’s fun!”
“Let’s do that, Li Ming!” says Jenny. “Let’s have a special dinner! Let’s make dumplings!” Lesson 29
A Special Supper.
Let’s go to a restaurant!
Li Ming is going to a Chinese restaurant with Jenny’s family this evening.
Why? Because they want to have a special supper. Today is Chinese New Year’s Eve!
Do Mr. and Mrs. Smith like Chinese food?
Li Ming doesn’t know. What would you order for Jenny’s family?
This restaurant makes good soup! Here’s some pork! Delicious! Would they like noodles? Li Ming does!
Or shrimp? This tea is hot! Would they like beef? Beef comes from cows.
Everyone likes chicken. Let’s order chicken. Rice is good.
Number two. At the restaurant.
Jenny’s family is sitting at a table in the restaurant. Everyone is hungry.
The waiter brings some menus.
They are special menus for the Chinese New Year. “Look at the menu,” says Mrs. Smith. “What are all these animals, Li Ming?” The rat is first!
“Those are Chinese years,” says Li Ming. “Would you like to know your year, Mr. Smith?” “Sure!” says Mr. Smith.
“How old are you?” asks Li Ming. “I’m 43 years old,” says Mr. Smith.
“I want to know my year, too!” says Lynn. “I’m eight years old!”
“I’m 82 years old.” says Jenny’s grandfather. “What year am I?” Do you know? Lesson 30. Dumplings! Number one.
Flour, salt, oil and pork.
It’s time to make dumplings, Jenny!
We always make dumplings for the Chinese New Year!
What do we need to make dumplings? Here’s what we need.
This is flour. Do you have any flour?
We need some salt. Do you have any salt?
This is oil. We need some pork. Pork is good in dumplings!
We need some vegetables, too. I have some green onions. I have some cabbage and ginger, number two.
Let’s make dumplings!
Put some flour and cold water in a bowl! What are you doing now?
I’m mixing the flour and cold water.
Mixed the pork and vegetables and a different bowl. Add some salt and oil.
Now we’re ready to make dumplings! First make a circle.
Then put some meat in the middle of the circle. Close the circle with your fingers. Pinch it! Look! I made a dumpling! Good! Let’s cook the dumplings on the stove and eat them!
